"Where Rock Creek's cold, clean waters meet the Clark Fork River east of Missoula, 300 acres of Montana bottomland nearly became a 38-lot subdivision. A developer had already scarred the earth — excavating an 8-acre pond, piling up berms — before the 2008 recession stopped the bulldozers. Five Valleys Land Trust saw something else in that wounded ground: a chance at redemption. In 2012, with $1.9 million raised from the state, neighbors, and conservation partners, they purchased the property outright — the first land they'd ever owned for keeps. What followed was a slow, patient healing. The artificial pond was removed and a natural wetland returned, fed by groundwater. Native grasses replaced noxious weeds. University researchers banded birds in restored riparian habitat. Salish elders reconnected with Np̓nétk — "Logs in the Water," their name for Rock Creek. Refugee families from Soft Landing Missoula explored the trails. A wheelchair-accessible path was carved through the property so that everyone, regardless of ability, could reach the water's edge. What was once destined for driveways and lot lines became a living laboratory, a classroom, a place of quiet restoration — proof that the land, given the chance, will always find its way back."

Dedicating a tree in Mom's memory gave our family something we didn't know we needed — a real place to go, on protected land, that will be there for our grandchildren too.
